This Week at PVUMC 8/13/24

Pastor Steve’s Sermon: Last Sunday I preached on what our anger is for. You can read it here.

Everyone’s Away This Week: Diane Coppock is on vacation and your pastors are away on a clergy retreat. Reach out to Tony Easley for any Trustees issues or Jessica Harrison for Staff/Parish Relation issues.

Pastor Anne Preaching This Sunday: Come join us for Anne’s first sermon as Pastor Anne! She will be reminding us about God’s loving investment in helping us making wise decisions that benefit our relationships with God, others, and ourselves. In the Spirit of the topic we will be having communion!

Methodism 101: In September, Pastor Steve and Pastor Anne will be leading a five-week course on learning the basics of Methodism. It is for anyone ages 12 and up. We will explore our theology, church history, and the peculiarities of our tradition. This is a great course for prospective members, young people interested in confirmation, and seasoned veterans wanting a deeper understanding of their methodist identity. We will gather in the sanctuary (September 8 – October 5: 5:30-7:00pm).

Journey to New Beginnings: Our Journey Series continues with a powerful group on grief. The group will meet August 21 – October 9 from 6:00-7:30pm. We will explore the stages of grief and the cumulative effects of loss. This group is for anyone who has experienced any kind of loss at any time in their life. I have come to learn that a significant part of the spiritual journey is learning to grieve well and I hope you all consider this incredible opportunity.

PVUMC Craft Fair at the Pavilion: Spread the word: Vendors Needed! Our Prayer Shawl Ministry will be hosting a Craft Fair at the Pavilion on October 5th. Proceeds will benefit the Prayer Shawl Ministry. They not only use their proceeds to buy yarn but also support missions and ministry in our community. Pastor Steve’s Sermon: Last Sunday was Back to School Sunday. The livestream had technical difficulties. Please forgive the inconvenience. You can read my previous week’s sermons here.

Safe Sanctuary Training: THIS SUNDAY! All church members and prospective church members are encouraged to attend our Safe Sanctuary Training. Being a healing community that serves the community and loves our neighbor also means providing safe and organized space for children and vulnerable adults to thrive! We will have our meeting after church on August 11th in the sanctuary. A light lunch will be provided. This is something that is required by the conference every four years if you are going to be serving children or vulnerable adults.

55 & Alive at Trina’s House: Meet at the church at 10:45am on Thursday and take the bus with our 55 & Alive crew at Trina’s house. Lunch will be provided and we will play cornhole. All are welcome!

*UPDATE* This Sunday: Back to School Bash!

Back to School Bash is this Sunday, August 4th. We will have a cookout and water fun after the service, so dress accordingly (dress as casual as you like). Bring backpacks to be blessed! Keep reading for some more important info:

School Supply Drive:
We have already gotten a ton of stuff in and are excited about delivering these to PVES and ECES. If you are out this weekend, here is what we really need to round out our list:
Scissors,
Crayons,
Coloring Pencils,
Glue Sticks,
Pencil Boxes,
Watercolor Paints,
Wide Ruled Notebook Paper

Set Up/Clean up:
We will be setting up for the party during the Sunday School hour at 9am. We need all the help we can get to set up tables, chair, popup tents, fill coolers with ice, cut up the watermelon. We should have plenty of hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, cookies and cold drinks to serve for the party. Of course, you are always welcome to bring your lunch from home or something to share but it is not necessary. If you have it in you to stay behind and clean up the party will go until about 12:30pm.

Sorting Party:
On Monday, August 4th, we will gather in the Fellowship Hall to sort and deliver our school supplies. We have been invited to set up a table in the lobby of PVES to distribute school supplies to anyone who needs them during the school’s Open House from 4:30-6:30pm. All ages are welcome to come and serve!

Teacher Appreciation Breakfast:
Tuesday, August 5th at 8:00am. Come and show your appreciation for our teachers. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall between 7:00 and 7:30. Talk to Trina if you want to contribute!

Our students return to school on Wednesday, August 7th, let’s make sure our neighbors start the year with the love of Christ going before them!
